YOUR 2023 DJS

Deb Waltenberg - Christchurch - Fri night

Debs became a DJ from her love of tango music and dance, she is a regular DJ at the Casa Republica Milonga in Christchurch and has been a DJ for several overseas teachers and other tango events. Her passion for tango music grew from her trips to Buenos Aires both dancing and listening to the beauty of tango at the traditional milonga halls. As a tango dancer she likes to feel emotion on all levels, so when she DJs she loves to see the tango orchestras and singers work their magic on the dancers. "My preference is for the more traditional orchestras and of course I have my favourites but I'm very mindful of playing music for all tango dancers. For me when I DJ I try to take the dancers on a journey so I look forward to you joining me in Hanmer at the Fri night milonga where we can share the journey together."

Maida Zanaboni - Auckland - Sat afternoon

"I arrived in NZ , from New York City, in December 2001 with my music collection. That was the beginning of my DJ journey here. Listening to and collecting music is my bliss. The dancers joy, when they are dancing to a track that they connect to is my joy. As a dancer myself, my personal taste goes into my choice of music. In all our travels, I always make it a point to return here with new and interesting tracks that I've heard from other DJ's, around the world. My aim is to keep the energy high and leaving the dancers wanting more."

Marian McGuire  - Christchurch - Sat night

Marian has been teaching at Floorspace Tango in Christchurch since 2004. She is the resident DJ of the weekly milonga and also DJ's one-off events both in Christchurch and further afield. Marian has made numerous trips to Argentina and the milongas of Buenos Aires colour her DJing style. She fuses this traditional foundation with the needs of the local scene, adapting her lists to keep dancers on the floor. A committed social dancer herself, Marian has a deep love of tango. As a teacher she concentrates on close embrace tango, with particular emphasis on how moves can be inventively adapted on the crowded floor using the music as inspiration.

Brendon Varcoe - Nelson - Sun  morning

Tango and the country of Argentina holds a special place in my heart. I am excited to be able to share my love and passion for tango through my dj'ing. Music is such a big part of my life. As well as playing and studying bandoneon in Buenos Aires, currently I am also studying a Masters degree in Orchestration so my love of the orchestra has given me a deep appreciation for both traditional tango orchestras as well as the many incredible modern tango orchestras. I have tremendous respect for the musicians of today who continue on the tradition of playing live in the milonga as well as those who have gone before. All music evokes emotion and tango music especially, from the dramatic to the playful, the romantic to the melancholic, the best music brings out the emotion in the dance and always when I prepare a playlist I am thinking with this in the forefront of my mind. So expect a playlist full of life, emotion, a little drama and hopefully some fun, because at the end of the day we all come together in this great dance to enjoy ourselves and the people around us."
